TITLE: NUTRITION & PRESSURE INJURIES: PUTTING THE NEW GUIDELINES INTO PRACTICE

DESCRIPTION: The 2019 Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers/Injuries: Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) provide specific recommendations for the prevention and treatment of pressure injuries. The focus of this presentation is to demonstrate how to put the nutrition recommendations into practice using validated tools, recommendations and best practices outlined in the 2019 CPG and critical assessment of nutrition care services for individuals at risk for or with pressure injuries. 1 hour program.

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this program, the successful participant will be able to:

  • Explore the diagnostic criteria for disease and injury related malnutrition.
  • Discuss targeted nutrients to optimize healing.
  • Discuss the most current nutrition recommendations for pressure injury prevention and treatment.
  • Develop an action plan to implement nutrition recommendations of the Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers/Injuries: Clinical Practice Guideline

TITLE: NUTRITION FOCUSED PHYSICAL EXAM: MAKING CLINICAL CONNECTIONS

DESCRIPTION: Hands-on program focusing on identification of malnutrition and physical evidence of nutrient deficiencies and/or toxicities to use in conjunction with lab test results and dietary intake data. Macro and micronutrient deficiencies are reported in the elderly, patients with malabsorptive disorders and weight loss surgery patients. Nutrient deficiencies discussed will include protein, thiamine, folate, biotin, vitamin B12, vitamin D, vitamin A, iron, copper and others. Sample case studies using NCP and PES statements can be included. 1-6 hour program.

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this program, the successful participant will be able to:

  • Identify physical changes and biomarkers for selected vitamin mineral deficiencies
  • Examine and practice assessment techniques for changes in body composition and functional status to incorporate into current clinical assessment practices.
  • Apply and practice physical and functional assessment techniques using a case study approach.

CDR Learning Codes that can apply 3000, 3010, 3020, 3060, 4170, 4180, 4190, 5000, 5010, 5030, 5040, 5050, 5090, 5100 and other codes deemed appropriate.

TITLE: PREHABILITATION: TACTICS TO THWART THE GRIP OF MALNUTRITION

DESCRIPTION: Program focuses on tactics to identify patients at high risk of or with malnutrition and strategies to replenish nutrient deficits prior to surgery and during recovery. Validated risk assessment tools and evidence-based intervention strategies will be discussed. Case study is included to apply new concepts. 1 hour program.

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this program, the successful participant will be able to:

  • Compare validated risk assessment tools used in different population groups to identify risk for malnutrition.
  • Discuss the relationship between inflammatory stress, inflammatory biomarkers, cachexia and lab test results.
  • Examine evidence-based intervention strategies to incorporate into a prehabilitation program.

TITLE: LAB ASSESSMENT OF NUTRITIONAL STATUS: BRIDGING THEORY & PRACTICE

DESCRIPTION: Program focuses on use of lab assessment test results to predict nutritional status. Topics include protein status, inflammatory biomarkers, vitamin mineral deficiencies, risk markers for chronic diseases. Learn how to interpret commonly ordered lab test results. Information nutrition professionals need to justify requests for lab tests. 2-6 hour program.

Upon completion of this program, the successful participant will be able to:

  • Discuss the role of inflammation on interpretation of lab results.
  • Identify risk factors and biomarkers for selected vitamin mineral deficiencies.
